KOLKATA, May 13 -- Leena Gangopadhyay has stepped down as the chairperson of the West Bengal State Commission for Women before the end of her tenure, which was due to conclude in July. The resignation came after a few hours BJP leader Agnimitra Paul assumed office as the state's Minister for Women and Child Development.

Though no official explanation has been given for her decision, the timing of the resignation has sparked political discussion.

Questions over her continuation in the post had surfaced in recent weeks, particularly after the death of actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee in April.

Rahul drowned in Odisha's Talsari while shooting for 'Bhole Baba Paar Karega'. The incident had led to debates within sections of the Bengali film and TV industry over workplace practices, safety concerns and accountability, with some demanding restructuring in several statutory bodies. In fact, post the incident of Rahul, the film industry, under the leadership of Prosenjit Chatterjee, is framing SOP for safety and security at the workplace.
