Raiganj, Sept. 3 -- Lawyers and law clerks of Raiganj Judges Court and Islampur Sub-Divisional Court in North Dinajpur observed a cease-work programme on Thursday, protesting against orders to remove their temporary tin-shed chambers from the respective court premises. The agitating lawyers demanded rehabilitation before the eviction process began.
According to the lawyers, they received an order from the District Judge around three days ago directing the removal of unauthorised temporary sheds constructed by lawyers on the court premises at Raiganj and Islampur. Following the order, members of the Raiganj Bar Association and Islampur Bar Association stopped work and staged demonstrations at their respective courts.
Sayan Chowdhury, president of the Raiganj Judges Court Bar Association, said: "The existing court accommodation can provide sitting arrangements for only 50 lawyers, while more than 400 lawyers are practising at the court.
If the temporary sheds are removed, we and the litigants who come to the court seeking legal assistance will face serious difficulties. We urged the authorities to arrange alternative accommodation before launching the eviction drive".
Lawyers at Islampur court also raised the same demand. They warned that if the authorities failed to address their concerns, they would be compelled to intensify their agitation.
