India, July 8 -- The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an assistant engineer (civil) of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and two labour supply agents in Kargil for allegedly misappropriating BRO funds in Ladakh. The arrested engineer was posted as Officer In-charge of the Khatse-Batalik Sector under the 81 Road Construction Company (RCC). According to the CBI, he colluded with the two contractors to siphon off funds by preparing fake workmen lists and releasing payments that were later credited to the contractors' accounts. The agency has registered four FIRs based on complaints from the Ministry of Defence alleging corruption, criminal negligence, conspiracy, cheating, breach of trust and forgery. It has also conducted searches at 26 locations across several states, besides another search in Himachal Pradesh. The accused will be produced before a court in Ladakh, while the investigation is continuing.
