India, Aug. 21 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday reviewed specialised policing initiatives for women and senior citizens in the national capital and directed the police to strengthen emergency response and outreach for vulnerable groups. Sandhu held a review meeting with Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar and took stock of measures aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of women, children and elderly residents. During the meeting, the L-G reviewed the functioning and outreach of the Delhi Police's Senior Citizen Mobile Application and stressed the need for prompt grievance redressal, emergency assistance and regular interaction between beat-level police personnel and elderly residents. The L-G also reviewed the functioning and deployment of specialised 'Shishtachar Squads', which work to curb eve-teasing and street harassment, particularly around educational institutions, transit hubs and crowded marketplaces. He stressed heightened vigilance and proactive patrolling by such teams and called for zero tolerance towards offenders to ensure a safe environment for women and girl students. The meeting also reviewed the deployment of police personnel and security staff in Pink Buses to enhance the safety of women commuters. Sandhu stressed the importance of a visible presence of trained personnel and quick emergency response mechanisms in public transport. The L-G called for foolproof security measures, institutional empathy and sustained vigilance to ensure that women, children and senior citizens can move freely and safely in the city. He reiterated that there should be zero tolerance towards crimes targeting vulnerable sections and directed the Delhi Police to maintain a proactive approach towards their safety and security.
