New Delhi, Aug. 5 -- Delhi Lieutenant Governor Sardar TS Sandhu on Wednesday chaired a meeting with the Vice Chairman, DDA, and Secretary, Tourism, to explore ways to showcase the Capital's rich heritage, art and design traditions to its citizens as well as visitors from India and abroad.
The L-G directed the DDA to explore how its existing spaces across the Capital could be utilised for cultural and creative activities, including art installations, performances and heritage-linked programming.
He also pitched for developing Delhi's own iconic global cultural events through public-private partnerships, bringing together institutional expertise and private investment. Such events, he said, could become recurring fixtures on the city's calendar, drawing sustained attention and footfall while showcasing Delhi's artistic and cultural strengths globally. L-G also called for a dedicated focus on strengthening Delhi's night economy, noting that a vibrant after-dark cultural and commercial life could further support local artists, performers and small businesses. During the meeting, the LG emphasised the need to promote nation-building activities, boost the Capital's creative economy and inculcate a strong sense of civic pride among citizens. He said culture and heritage were not merely matters of preservation but powerful instruments for building a shared civic identity.
He highlighted the potential of Delhi's creative economy, spanning art, design, crafts and performance traditions, to generate livelihoods while strengthening the city's cultural fabric. He stressed the need to build on proven practices and create inclusive platforms that empower citizens, artists and youth to contribute meaningfully to preserving and promoting Delhi's cultural legacy. The L-G said Delhi should draw on best practices from other cities while remaining rooted in its distinct character. Describing the Capital as a melting pot of cultures from across India, he called for promoting heritage walks and similar citizen-facing initiatives.
