New Delhi, April 15 -- Privilege can be its own kind of trap and nobody knows that better than Gulrukh. Brought to life by Kritika Kamra in Prime Video's 'Matka King', she is a young Parsi widow from an affluent, sheltered world, yet with little real experience of life beyond it, making this unlike any character Kritika has played before. What drew Kritika in was the contradiction at Gulrukh's core and how the world of 'Matka' becomes the unlikely place where she finally finds herself.

Talking about playing Gulrukh in 'Matka King', Kritika shared, "Gulrukh comes from a space of power, privilege and a protected environment, yet despite all of this, she feels powerless and that's what makes the character so interesting. It's about how her journey in the show eventually leads her to discover her own sense of power. There's a strong contrast in her world. She belongs to one reality but finds herself stepping into another and that dynamic between people and power is extremely fascinating. My upbringing and Gulrukh's upbringing have nothing in common, so it was especially interesting to step into the shoes of someone who comes from privilege yet is looking for power to be liberated."

Elaborating on understanding the game of 'Matka', Kritika Kamra added, "We played 'Matka' multiple times, during table reads, on set, just to understand, because until you play the game, you won't understand the technicalities of it. We had received a brief which helped us understand the game theoretically; we read it, re-read it and then finally, after multiple rounds, understood the game."

Created and written by Abhay Koranne and created, written and directed by Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, the series features Vijay Varma, Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat and Gulshan Grover in lead roles. The cast also boasts Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Arpita Sethia, Sambhaji Tangade, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjivv Jotangia and Simran Ashwini in key roles.
