Kolkata, Oct. 12 -- The Kolkata Police have issued two summons to senior CPI(M) leader and veteran advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, directing him to appear for questioning in connection with a controversial social media post.
Bhattacharya, a prominent political figure and legal expert, has been ordered to present himself at two separate police stations this week. On October 13, he has been directed to appear at the Garfa Police Station while on October 14, Bhattacharya has been asked to appear at the Kasba Police Station.
The legal action follows an escalating political row that began on October 8, when Bhattacharya's residence was targeted in an early morning attack. An unidentified individual threw a liquor bottle at his house, shattering a window pane. While the police swiftly arrested a suspect identified as Bappa Guchhait, the incident triggered a sharp social media response from the CPI(M) leader.
Condemning the attack, Bhattacharya on social media labeled the perpetrators as 'Hindutva goons'. This remark immediately drew severe backlash from the ruling administration and right-wing groups.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari issued an ultimatum, demanding that the veteran leader retract or modify the wording
of his post.
