Kolkata, May 14 -- In a major development, Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shantanu Sinha Biswas who appeared before the ED on Thursday at the CGO Complex has been arrested after several hours of questioning.
According to sources, he reached the CGO Complex accompanied by his two lawyers. Till last reports came in, he was still being questioned by the ED officials.
Biswas appeared at the ED office within 24 hours, after a letter was sent to the Director of Security, asking for the DC's whereabouts.
On Wednesday, ED sought information on Biswas's whereabouts- where he has been deployed and what duty he is performing as the DC kept on skipping summons, citing busy schedules for VIP security.
A few days ago, the ED had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against the Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner after he repeatedly skipped summons in connection with a high-profile money-laundering case.
Biswas's name surfaced while probing allegations of land grabbing and extortion linked to a notorious criminal Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu. ED has reportedly claimed that Biswas has vital links to the proceeds of crime generated by the syndicate involved in the land grabbing and extortion.
The probe has also extended to his two sons, who were also summoned for questioning, but none of them appeared. Earlier, Biswas was also summoned in connection with the sand smuggling case.
However, he had sent his lawyer seeking additional time for his appearance.
