Kolkata, Oct. 29 -- Kolkata Police have busted a fake currency racket and arrested four men accused of attempting to cheat people of Rs 20 lakh using bundles of white paper topped with genuine currency notes.
The operation began on Tuesday when Burrabazar police, acting on a tip-off, intercepted two suspects, Vijaypal Tanwar alias Arvind and Shiva Thapa, near the intersection of Strand Road and Mirbahar Ghat Street.
Police recovered four bundles, each purportedly worth Rs 5 lakh and wrapped in counterfeit bank slips. On inspection, each bundle was found to contain only two genuine Rs 500 notes, one at the top and the other at the bottom, with 998 pieces of blank white paper cut to currency-note size in between. The actual cash recovered amounted to just Rs 4,000.
Following the interrogation of the duo, police raided a hideout in Howrah and arrested two alleged accomplices, Sunil Kumar Verma and Gopal Gujjar.
Police also seized a paper-rim cutter, a printer, white bond paper, ink cartridges and packaging materials allegedly used to prepare the deceptive bundles. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy.
