Kolkata, July 10 -- Kolkata Metro achieved a key milestone on Friday as Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Durga completed the first 1.75-km underground tunnel between Kidderpore and Victoria on the Purple Line.
Union Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw hailed the breakthrough as "engineering excellence beneath the city". Metro authorities said the year-long tunnelling beneath heritage structures and a canal was completed safely without injuries or excessive ground settlement.
The Purple Line is targeted for completion up to Esplanade by December 2029, with further extensions planned.
