Kolkata, Oct. 2 -- A woman who owns a city bus and also works as its conductor was among the highlights of Bus Jatra 4.0 on Friday, which this year focused on women working in Kolkata's bus transport sector.

Dolly Rana, owner-conductor of a Route 57 bus, was cited by Transport minister Arjun Singh as an example of women taking up roles traditionally associated with men.

Singh flagged off the fourth edition of Bus Jatra, organised by the Kolkata Bus-O-Pedia Foundation, and said the event offered an opportunity to understand the history of bus transport and draw lessons for the future. "If we do not know history, we cannot shape the future properly," he said. Referring to Rana, Singh said: "I saw another new thing - a woman who is herself the owner of a bus and also its conductor. She is proving that women are not behind anyone."

Five women conductors of the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC)-Sushmita Mondal, Priyanka Kundu, Lovely Ray, Pallabi Paul Mukherjee and Priyanka Banerjee-were also felicitated.

Mondal, 46, has worked as a conductor for around 25 years. She joined the profession after her father died when she was in Class IX.
