Kolkata, July 6 -- The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has launched a week-long special vector control drive, 'Swachhta Se Swagat', to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The campaign assumes significance with the monsoon setting in.

Ward teams and Rapid Action Teams (RATs) will carry out intensive inspections and vector control activities at key public institutions and government establishments over seven days, beginning Sunday.

According to a senior KMC official, the drive covered KMC borough and ward offices on Monday. On Tuesday, teams will visit all 85 police stations and traffic guards. On Wednesday, the focus will shift to 154 KMC schools, followed by central and state government office buildings on Thursday. Government housing complexes of both the Centre and the state will be covered on Friday, while KMC projects, including health facilities and other establishments, will be taken up on Saturday. The campaign will conclude on Sunday with a drive at 50 police housing complexes. The vector control measures include removal of stagnant water from potential mosquito breeding sites, larvicidal spraying, biological control measures, environmental management and other need-based interventions.

Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the two mosquito species known to transmit dengue. They can breed even in small quantities of stagnant rainwater. Once infected, these mosquitoes can spread the dengue virus, posing a serious risk of transmission in affected localities.
