Kolkata, Sept. 21 -- A road in Khidderpore will be named after slain IPS officer Vinod Mehta, Kartick Maharaj, who heads a state committee on road renaming, said on Monday.
The proposal was submitted by the IPS association. Mehta, then deputy commissioner of police (Port), was killed in Garden Reach in 1984 while leading police operations during a violent clash.
Maharaj said the state government has constituted a six-member committee to examine proposals for renaming streets in Kolkata and later across Bengal after personalities associated with Indian culture, Bengali history, the freedom movement and other significant contributions. Around 100 names have already been proposed.
The committee will also consider a proposal to rename Biswa Bangla Smarani after Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and submissions from citizens. Maharaj said decisions would be taken unanimously and changes made in accordance with law, with proposals placed before the Assembly if required. He also hinted at reviewing names associated with Karl Marx and Lenin.
