Kolkata, July 30 -- A day after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the Kanyashree scheme would be renamed Kanya Ratna and Sabuj Sathi would be rechristened Sarathi, TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh strongly criticised the move, accusing the BJP government of engaging in "politics of renaming" instead of introducing new initiatives.
Speaking to reporters in Beleghata on Thursday, the TMC MLA said Kanyashree was a unique welfare scheme conceived by Mamata Banerjee for girl students. He said the scheme was designed with different financial support stages so that students could receive assistance when they needed it most. Ghosh claimed that Kanyashree had earned international recognition as a model social welfare and social protection programme, and argued that changing its name would not diminish its significance. "It is not only recognised across India but has also received global recognition. Renaming such a scheme is unfortunate," he said.
He alleged that the state government was not introducing any major new programmes and was instead trying to claim credit by changing the names of projects launched by previous governments.
He further claimed that several Railway projects initiated during Mamata Banerjee's tenure had also undergone name changes. According to him, despite renaming multiple schemes within a short period, the government had failed to demonstrate significant new work for the people.
Ghosh asserted that Mamata Banerjee's welfare initiatives had benefited millions of people and maintained that the identity and legacy of Kanyashree could not be erased by changing its name. Mpost
