Kolkata, July 16 -- A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader from Kalyani in Nadia was allegedly assaulted by an angry mob before being arrested by the police on Wednesday night.
According to sources, the TMC leader, identified as Pankaj Singh, is the Kalyani block TMC president and the Pradhan of the Kanchrapara Panchayat. He had reportedly been evading the police in connection with a pending extortion case.
Sources said a large group of local residents tracked Singh down at his residential apartment near Kalyani Lake Park.
The agitated crowd allegedly dragged him out of the building, accusing him of large-scale financial corruption and systematic extortion. Singh was allegedly subjected to a severe assault before a team from Kalyani Police Station reached the spot, rescued him and brought the situation under control.
A video purportedly showing Singh being assaulted has gone viral on social media. However, Millennium Post could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
Owing to the injuries he sustained during the incident, police first took Singh to JNM Hospital in Kalyani for emergency medical treatment.
After he was discharged following the necessary treatment, he was formally arrested by the police in connection with the pending case.
