Kolkata, Sept. 28 -- Just ahead of Durga Puja, West Bengal is likely to get a much-needed break from the recent spell of rain, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating largely dry conditions across the state in the coming days.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, very light to light rain was recorded at one or two places in South Bengal, while dry weather prevailed across the rest of the region.
The weather system that had contributed to the recent spell of rain is now moving away from the region. A depression over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining Myanmar coast is moving north-northwestwards. It is then expected to move along and off the Myanmar coast towards the northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coast over the following two days.
The north-south trough extending from Bihar to the west-central Bay of Bengal has also weakened.
With the system moving away and the trough becoming less marked, widespread rainfall is not expected over West Bengal in the immediate period. The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is also continuing across the country, indicating a gradual transition towards a drier weather pattern.
For Kolkata and other parts of South Bengal, the change could mean a respite from the persistent rain seen in recent days, although isolated light showers may still occur in some areas.
