Kolkata, Oct. 13 -- Jadavpur University (JU) has withdrawn its October 8 order directing that the services of retired employees re-engaged on a temporary basis be discontinued with effect from October 15, and issued revised guidelines specifying separate end dates for their tenure.

Vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee withdrew the October 8 circular through an order issued on October 12. A fresh circular, issued on Tuesday sets different end dates depending on when each employee's existing tenure expires.

Under the revised guidelines, employees whose re-engagement period expired on September 30 can continue until October 14, with no further extension. Those whose tenure expires in October can continue until October 31, while those whose tenure expires in November can remain in service until November 30. Employees whose tenure was due to end in December will also have to leave by November 30.

The university has also clarified that no further applications for re-employment or re-engagement will be considered.

The October 8 directive was expected to affect more than 70 employees and had raised concerns over staff shortages, particularly in laboratories.
