Kolkata, Nov. 5 -- In a major breakthrough in a case registered in 2020 at the Usti Police Station related to the attack on the convoy of the then BJP leader, JP Nadda who is now the Union Minister, police on Thursday arrested the former TMC youth wing president of Mograhat West, Imran Hasan.
With the arrest made on Thursday, the total number of recent arrests in the case reached five. Earlier, police had arrested a total of four persons, including Jahangir Khan.
The case dates back to December 10, 2020, when was travelling to attend a party rally in Diamond Harbour. As his convoy passed through the Sirakol area, it was heavily ambushed by a mob throwing stones and bricks.
However, Nadda escaped unhurt due to his bulletproof vehicle, but multiple vehicles in his convoy were allegedly vandalised. The incident had triggered a massive political firestorm between the BJP and TMC ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, leading to a prolonged standoff between the state government and the Union Home Ministry.
It is alleged that Hasan also allegedly had formed a gang of miscreants in the Usti area to exert influence, create terror, extortion and supply illegal weapons. Two separate cases were registered against him at the Usti Police Station on August 27 and September 6 of this year. Since the registration of these two cases, Imran had been reportedly changing his place of stay repeatedly to avoid arrest.
