New Delhi, Sept. 1 -- Journalist Abhishek Upadhyay, who reported on the alleged theft of donations from the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, has approached the Supreme Court challenging a request by the Ghaziabad Police seeking information about his activities on X. The plea comes after the Supreme Court had earlier granted Upadhyay protection from coercive action in a road-rage case registered against him. Upadhyay had alleged that the case was filed as a counterblast to his report on the alleged theft of temple donations.
During Tuesday's hearing, his lawyer told a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant that the Ghaziabad Police had sought Upadhyay's digital footprint from X starting June 1, 2026. According to his lawyer, Upadhyay was informed by X that the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghaziabad Police had requested his entire digital activity from that date. The lawyer argued that the information sought had no connection with the road-rage case, as the incident that led to the FIR took place on August 18, more than two months after the period for which the police had sought the data. He further submitted that the period covered by the request coincided with the time when Upadhyay was gathering information for his reports on the alleged Ram Mandir donation theft.
Upadhyay has expressed concern that granting the police access to his digital information could potentially allow them to identify and harass the sources who provided information for his reports.
