Kolkata, June 9 -- The defeated TMC candidate from Falta Assembly Constituency, Jahangir Khan, who was arrested near the Indo-Nepal border on Sunday afternoon, was remanded to police custody for five days, after being produced at the Diamond Harbour Court on Tuesday.

Khan, during the election period had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking interim protection from arrest, but the plea was rejected. He had been absconding since then.

Multiple FIRs have been registered against Khan, including one alleging tampering with EVMs on polling day. After weeks of absconding, Khan was arrested on Sunday afternoon at Panitanki Bazar, while he was allegedly attempting to flee to Nepal.

After securing a transit remand, the TMC leader was flown to Kolkata late on Monday and escorted out through the airport's arrival lounge for security reasons.

On Tuesday morning, police produced Khan in court early to prevent any untoward incidents.

On Tuesday, following the hearing, Khan was remanded to five days of police custody. As police escorted him out of the court, a crowd gathered outside allegedly hurled eggs at him and raised slogans against the TMC leader.

Anticipating possible unrest, the police had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure his safe exit from the court premises.
