New Delhi, Aug. 27 -- Kolkata; The judicial inquiry commission set up by Jadavpur University to investigate the recent campus violence held its first meeting on Thursday morning, though the proceedings were shifted from the main campus to the university's Salt Lake campus.
Retired Calcutta High Court judge Pranab Kumar Chattopadhyay, who is heading the commission, said that it will try to complete the inquiry at the earliest. However, he emphasised that the pace of the proceedings would depend on the volume of documents and information received and the number of people seeking to present their versions to the panel.
He added that the commission would review all documents submitted by the university authorities and would also accept and examine any information or documents provided by other parties. He reiterated that he would hear all those who wished to make submissions before taking further steps.
Justice Chattopadhyay said the commission would decide through discussion how complaints would be received and from whom.
"In accordance with the terms of reference, we will examine every aspect thoroughly.
All complaints, newspaper cuttings or other clippings submitted before the commission will be discussed and scrutinised," he said.
At a meeting on Monday, the university decided to appoint retired Calcutta High Court judge Pranab Kumar Chattopadhyay as chairman of the commission. Another member of the panel, Arunashis Goswami, subsequently stepped down.
Another member is Soumendu Chattopadhyay, director of the IQAC at Presidency University, while Jadavpur University micro analyst Sumanta Jana is serving as the presenting officer.
The university's main campus has remained tense since August 19 night, when a general body meeting called for engineering students allegedly led to clashes between members of the ABVP and Left student organisations.
Both sides, along with the university authorities, have lodged complaints with the police. Investigators have also collected CCTV footage from the campus in connection with the incident.
