
New Delhi, June 9 -- Beyond the realm of conventional military relations, India and Israel are forging a special strategic partnership which now encompasses critical infrastructure, innovation, and emerging technologies, among others, Indian Ambassador to Israel Reuven Azar was quoted saying recently, noting that the partnership is based on shared democratic values and security concerns.
While addressing the Israel Independence Day celebrations held in the national capital, Azar said India and Israel were linked by their common civilisational legacy, democracy, and their joint fight against terrorism and promoting inclusive development.
Azar said India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Israel had paved the way for the strengthening of ties, as he termed the relations as being elevated to the status of Special Strategic Partnership. In this connection, Azar said Modi's visit had led to the signing of as many as 18 cooperation agreements.
"Israel and India are not just cooperating in the field of defence anymore; our cooperation now includes critical infrastructure, technology, and several more strategic fields," Azar said, noting that India's growing prominence in the international community would be helpful in bringing regional stability after geopolitics normalises.
Addressing Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh and other VIPs, the ambassador noted that their attendance was a clear sign of improving relations between India and Israel.
The Indian people had also been thanked for their support and friendship towards the nation of Israel.
Commenting on the security scenario in his country, Azar noted that Israel remained strong despite facing new problems following the October 7, 2023, attack.
"As we mark our independence, Israel is faced with yet another challenge," he added, reiterating his confidence that Israel will overcome the crisis.
In an effort to emphasise the economic strength of Israel, the ambassador pointed out that Israel's GDP has crossed the $700 billion mark even amid the war.
This feat was attributed to the efforts of its citizens and technological advancements.
