Siliguri, Nov. 5 -- The Matigara police have busted an alleged international cyber fraud racket operating under the guise of a call centre from a rented apartment in Matigara and arrested nine persons in connection with the case. During the raid, police seized seven laptops and 20 mobile phones allegedly used in the fraudulent operations.
The arrested persons have been identified as Ravi Singh, Arindam Singh Roy, Agnes Esake, Bharat Sharma, Irshad Ahmed, Shubham Sharma, Mohsin Ansari, Nalin Singh and Rehan Khan. The accused are residents of Bengal, Bihar and Rajasthan.
According to police sources, acting on a tip-off received, a special team from Matigara police station conducted a raid at an apartment in the wee hours of Thursday.
During the search, police found several people working with laptops and mobile phones. When asked to produce the required licences and documents to operate the call centre, those present allegedly failed to provide any valid authorisation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the racket primarily targeted customers in the United States through IP telephony.
The accused allegedly contacted foreign customers using pre-prepared scripts and were trained to carry out fraudulent activities. Police suspect that the operation had been running for nearly six months.
