New Delhi, Sept. 8 -- India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in a global initiative aimed at guiding the development and deployment of next-generation 6G telecommunications networks. The agreement was finalised after a bilateral meeting between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The initiative seeks to ensure that future 6G networks reflect shared security interests, strengthen technological competitiveness and encourage innovation. Prasada led the Indian delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministers' meeting held on September 1 and 2. The Indian delegation included senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Department of Science and Technology, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and the Indian Embassy in the US. During his meeting with Lutnick, Prasada also discussed strengthening cooperation between India and the US in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and data centres. He also highlighted opportunities for greater US investment in India's semiconductor programme and discussed strengthening the AI technology partnership.
The G20 Innovation Ministerial concluded with a statement recognising the potential of emerging technologies to boost prosperity, productivity and opportunities. The engagements also highlighted India's efforts to play a greater role in shaping the global technology and innovation agenda, including through strategic partnerships in AI, semiconductors, digital public infrastructure, robotics and other emerging technologies.
