Raiganj, May 13 -- Panic gripped Shitalpur village under Hemtabad police station in North Dinajpur district following the mysterious death of a pregnant housewife on Tuesday night. The deceased, identified as Lakkhi Roy (23), was allegedly strangled to death over dowry demands, according to her family members. Police have arrested her husband, Bablu Roy, in connection with the incident.

According to local sources, Lakkhi had married Bablu Roy, a farmer of Shitalpur, around three years ago. The couple has a two-year-old daughter and Lakkhi was reportedly four months pregnant at the time of her death. Family members of the deceased alleged that Bablu Roy and his parents had been pressuring Lakkhi to bring Rs 3 lakh as dowry from her parental home.

Swapan Roy, a relative of the deceased, claimed: "Lakkhi had been subjected to mental and physical torture for the past several months over the demand. On Tuesday night, Bablu informed us over the phone that Lakkhi had died suddenly. When we reached the house, we suspected that she had been strangled.

She had no serious illness. A written complaint was lodged with the Hemtabad Police

Station against Bablu Roy and his parents.

Sujit Kumar Lama, IC of Hemtabad police station, said: "Bablu Roy was arrested and produced before a court on Wednesday, while efforts are on to trace the other accused. Investigation is underway."
