New Delhi, May 14 -- A 28-year-old newlywed woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband following a quarrel over dowry and money-related disputes in central Delhi's Nabi Karim area, leading to the arrest of two persons, police said.

The accused were identified as Ejaz (39) and Sarfaraz (29), both residents of Vaishali in Bihar.

According to the police, the incident came to light on the night of May 8 after a PCR call was received from a landlord in Laxmanpuri, Nabi Karim, reporting a foul smell from a tenant's locked room.

When police reached the spot, they found the decomposed body of a woman lying on a bed inside the rented accommodation.

The deceased, a resident of Haldwani in Uttarakhand, had married Ejaz on April 26 and the couple had recently started living together in the rented room, police said.

An FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Nabi Karim Police Station and an investigation was launched. Police said allegations of dowry harassment were also levelled against Ejaz and his brother Sarfaraz by the victim's father, following which Sarfaraz was arrested on May 10.

A dedicated police team carried out technical surveillance after the accused absconded. During interrogation, Ejaz allegedly confessed that he strangled his wife during an argument on the intervening night of May 6 and 7 before locking the room and fleeing to Kolkata.

Police also recovered the deceased's Oppo A18 mobile phone, which the accused allegedly sold for Rs 2,500 to finance his escape.
