Kolkata, Sept. 30 -- Humayun Kabir, MLA of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) and party chief, met officials of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission on Wednesday, complaining that police were illegally arresting and harassing his party members ahead of the October 6 bypoll in Rejinagar.
Kabir appeared at the commission's office along with party workers and alleged that police were conducting raids at the homes of AJUP supporters and targeting party functionaries to harass them, so they cannot work for the party.
The MLA complained against police officers of Beldanga, Nawada and Shaktinagar police stations for allegedly heckling the party workers. "They are facing harassment and arrests," Kabir said.
"My partymen and supporters are being tortured unilaterally. Their houses are being raided," Kabir alleged after meeting WBHRC officials.
He claimed that the issue was not confined to AJUP workers and that several residents of Murshidabad also raised concerns over alleged police atrocities.
The allegations come amid heightened political activity in Murshidabad ahead of the Rejinagar bypoll, where AJUP is contesting.
BJP MP Rahul Sinha, however, said that the allegations were baseless and that, as Kabir's party is going to lose the polls, he is creating an environment for it.
