Kolkata, Sept. 9 -- AJUP president Humayun Kabir, who resigned as MLA from Rejinagar, has nominated his son, Gulam Nabi Azad, as the party's candidate for the seat. Azad filed his nomination on Wednesday, accompanied by his father.
The bypoll is scheduled for October 6, with the results to be declared on October 9.
Humayun resigned from the Rejinagar seat and retained Nowda, having won both Assembly constituencies in the 2026 elections. Similarly, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari won from Bhowanipore and Nandigram, but resigned from Nandigram, necessitating a bypoll there.
The EC held meetings with the DMs of East Midnapore and Murshidabad and plans to deploy 71 companies of central forces, with 35 companies for Nandigram and 36 for Rejinagar.
Riju Dutta, a leader of a Trinamool rebel group, said that they would not nominate any candidate for Nandigram if Mamata Banerjee decides to contest from there.
