NEW DELHI, May 12 -- The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested a man in connection with the alleged abduction and assault of an on-duty Excise Department official, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Sahab Singh (34), a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, was wanted in a case registered at Shalimar Bagh police station earlier this year.

According to police, the incident took place on the intervening night of February 22 and 23, when the complainant, an Excise Department staff member, was performing official duty.

Singh and his associates allegedly assaulted the official and forcibly abducted him in an i10 car. Investigators said the victim was taken to Bahalgarh in Haryana, where he was assaulted again inside a liquor warehouse.

An FIR was registered on February 23 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to abduction, assault and obstruction of a public servant from discharging official duty.

Police said three accused had earlier been arrested in the case, while Singh had evaded arrest for several months despite repeated raids. Proceedings under Section 84 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were subsequently initiated against him by a court.

Acting on a tip-off regarding his movement towards Khatu Shyam, a Crime Branch team laid a trap near Dhaula Kuan bus stand and apprehended him on May 11 at around 10.30 am.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of ACP Ramesh Chander and Inspector Kamal Kumar, police said.

During investigation, police found Singh had played an active role in the alleged abduction and assault. Officials added that he is a habitual offender and has been involved in five criminal cases in Delhi and Haryana, including cases related to human trafficking, rape, kidnapping, assault and excise violations.

The accused was produced before a court, formally arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
