India, Aug. 13 -- Two women, including an eight-month pregnant woman, were killed and two toddlers injured after a three-storey house collapsed amid heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district on Wednesday, as widespread downpours disrupted normal life across the state. The incident occurred in Chhichhadiya Dhar village in the Rajgarh subdivision, where nearby residents immediately launched a rescue operation and pulled the four trapped persons from the rubble. They were rushed to the Rajgarh Civil Hospital, where doctors declared the two women dead. Local Panchayat Pradhan Ved Prakash Thakur identified the deceased as Nirmala (60), wife of Bhim Singh, and her daughter Pooja (32). The house belonged to Bhim Singh. Heavy widespread rains in Himachal Pradesh led to the closure of 209 roads on Wednesday and disrupted essential infrastructure as the weather department forecast a wet spell in the state till August 18 and issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Dhaulakuan recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 80.5 mm since Tuesday evening, followed by Jatton Barrage at 67 mm, Dharamshala at 57.2 mm, Palampur at 54.6 mm, Paonta Sahib at 50.8 mm, Bajaura at 37 mm and Nahan at 26.5 mm. Mandi was the worst hit with 94 blocked roads, followed by Kullu with 60, Shimla with 21, Sirmaur with 11, Chamba with 10, Kangra with five and Una with four. Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti reported closure of two roads each. The state received 103.5 mm of rainfall against the normal 116 mm between August 1 and 12, a deficit of 11 per cent. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 30, 75 people have died in rain-related incidents, including 14 in landslides and one in a flash flood, officials said. The state has suffered losses estimated at Rs 911 crore due to the monsoon, they said.
