Kolkata, May 25 -- A notorious criminal from Howrah, arrested earlier this month, was taken through the streets of North Howrah on Sunday afternoon as part of a police reconstruction of a past crime incident.
According to sources, the accused, identified as Akash Singh of North Howrah, is allegedly involved in multiple criminal activities including murder, extortion and shootouts. Police also claimed that he was close to former Howrah Uttar MLA Gautam Chowdhury. Singh was reportedly wanted in nearly 20 cases registered with the Howrah City Police, mainly under the Golabari and Malipanchghara police stations. Following the Assembly election results, officers of the Detective Department of Howrah City Police arrested him from Kolaghat in East Midnapore. Police said Singh was allegedly involved in a 2021 post-poll violence case in which miscreants had opened fire on police personnel.
On Sunday, investigators took him to the spot where the incident had occurred to reconstruct the sequence
of events. During the exercise, Singh was seen handcuffed and walking through the streets of North Howrah wearing only undergarments while accompanied by police personnel. Investigators are currently questioning him to trace his associates, several of whom are still absconding.
The development comes amid the state government's crackdown on criminal activities following the Assembly elections. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had earlier asserted that all criminals involved in attacks on police personnel would be arrested and brought to justice.
