New Delhi, Sept. 29 -- The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday seeking measures to strengthen student and women's safety and improve hostel facilities.

DUSU president Yash Dabas, secretary Riya Chhawdi, joint secretary Lakshya Raj Singh and ABVP Delhi State secretary Sarthak Sharma met the Chief Minister and raised concerns over the shortage of hostels, safety standards in paying guest (PG) accommodations and buildings, and security arrangements around the university.

The memorandum sought construction of new hostels, regular safety audits of PG accommodations and buildings, improved lighting at dark spots, adequate Pink Booths and regular monitoring of police patrolling vehicles. The students' body also sought appropriate compensation for families affected by the Satya Niketan incident.

Dabas said adequate and safe hostel facilities were essential for Delhi University students and called for regular safety audits in accordance with prescribed standards.

Chhawdi said negligence on women's safety was unacceptable and sought improved lighting, stronger patrolling arrangements and more Pink Booths in and around the university campus.

Sharma said continuous monitoring and accountability were needed on issues concerning student safety. He urged the government and institutions to take time-bound measures to improve hostel and building safety and ensure adequate security arrangements.

The delegation said coordinated action by the university administration and the Delhi Government was necessary to prevent similar incidents.
