Malda, June 29 -- The recent change in the state government has revived hopes among residents of Chanchal Subdivision that the long-pending proposal to establish three new police stations in Malda district will finally become a reality.
The proposal, first initiated in 2021, aimed to bifurcate Chanchal Police Station by setting up a new police station at Malatipur and divide Harishchandrapur Police Station to create two additional stations at Tulsihata and Bhaluka. Senior police officials had inspected the proposed sites several times, but the plan was eventually put on hold.
According to police sources, the absence of the proposed police stations has placed immense pressure on the existing force in maintaining law and order. Chanchal Police Station alone covers around 455 villages with nearly five lakh voters, while the actual population is estimated to be much higher.
Harishchandrapur Police Station also serves a vast area bordering Bihar, making policing increasingly challenging with limited manpower. Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh said, "The decision rests with the state government. The proposal for the three police stations has already been submitted. If the government seeks an updated report, we will provide it."
Police officials believe that creating additional police stations would significantly improve policing, ensure quicker emergency response, and strengthen security in the border areas. Land for the proposed Malatipur Police Station is reportedly available, while suitable land for
Tulsihata and Bhaluka is yet to be identified.
Expressing the aspirations of local residents, Chanchal Merchants' Association secretary Sudip Ghosh said, "The promises of a police district and new police stations remained unfulfilled. With the change in government, we are hopeful that the new administration will take up the matter seriously."
Residents now await concrete action, hoping that the long-delayed proposal will finally be implemented to improve public safety and policing across the region.
