Kolkata, Oct. 30 -- The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted bail to Suman Hazra, a businessman accused of being part of the alleged financial corruption network involving former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh. Hazra's alleged role in the case centred on the suspected diversion and sale of medicines meant for hospital patients.

The vacation bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh granted him bail against a bond of Rs 20,000, while imposing restrictions on his movement and directing him to cooperate with the investigation. Hazra cannot travel beyond the jurisdiction of Kolkata, Howrah and Bidhannagar without permission. He has also been directed to surrender his passport and furnish his contact details to the investigating officer of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI has been examining whether medicines supplied for the hospital were deliberately shown as unavailable or in short supply before being diverted to Hazra's medical outlet at Mourigram in Howrah. Hazra and another vendor, Biplab Singha, are suspected of having facilitated the alleged laundering of money for Ghosh.

The bail order comes weeks after the Supreme Court granted bail to Ghosh in the financial irregularities case. The allegations against the former principal had initially been brought to light by Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent of RG Kar, who had raised questions over financial dealings and alleged irregularities in the hospital's administration. The CBI is investigating the alleged financial misconduct.
