Kolkata, Aug. 4 -- State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul visited the ancestral house of iconic broadcaster and radio artist Birendra Krishna Bhadra in Shyambazar on Tuesday to mark his birth anniversary.
Highlighting the legendary artist's indispensable contribution to Bengal's cultural identity-particularly his iconic "Mahishasuramardini" recitation on Mahalaya, Paul put forward two key proposals. She proposed declaring Bhadra's ancestral house in North Kolkata a heritage site to ensure its preservation. Following discussions with his family, she proposed renaming the nearby Shyambazar metro station in his honour to commemorate his everlasting legacy.
The minister's proposals received warm support from family members, cultural enthusiasts, and local residents who welcomed the government's recognition of the legendary personality. Paul also assured that these requests, along with a proposal to install a statue of Birendra Krishna Bhadra near Akashvani Bhavan, would be formally presented to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for administrative consideration and implementation.
Meanwhile, Paul paid floral tributes at his statue and met with his family members, including his daughter-in-law Sushmita Bhadra. The visit comes at a time when the state government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has placed a strong emphasis on preserving and promoting Bengal's artistic and cultural legacy.
Later in the day, Paul took to social media and said: "Had the honour of meeting Sushmita Bhadra, the respected daughter-in-law of
Bengal's legendary voice, Birendra Krishna Bhadra. It was a truly warm and memorable interaction."
