Kolkata, Sept. 4 -- The West Bengal Transport Department has set up dedicated 24-hour control rooms to address complaints related to government bus services, including instances of buses failing to stop for women passengers and alleged misconduct by conductors and other staff.

The move follows complaints that government buses often fail to stop for women passengers waiting to board, as well as complaints about bus services and alleged misconduct by conductors.

"We have given these numbers so that anyone can complain to our control room 24 hours a day about bus services or if a conductor is misbehaving," Singh said. The department has announced separate helplines for different state transport undertakings. Passengers can contact NBSTC at 9046229025, SBSTC at 7699993930, CTC at 8697733391/92, CSTC at 033-22360462/0463 and WBSTC at 9432597098.

Officials will take necessary action on complaints and escalate cases to senior authorities wherever required for speedy resolution.

The department has also launched a special drive to recover outstanding motor vehicle tax. According to the VAHAN database, approximately Rs 1,589 crore is pending against 3,62,622 vehicles, with persistent and high-value defaulters being targeted under the recovery exercise. Among other measures, the department is also regulating e-rickshaws on national and state highways and working to strengthen inter-state connectivity through reciprocal transport arrangements.

Road safety has also been prioritised, with Rs 4.35 crore sub-allotted to police authorities for road-safety activities.
