Kolkata, Oct. 25 -- Health minister Sharadwat Mukherjee has ordered a probe into the death of an 11-year-old boy at the Mother and Child Hub of Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, following allegations of medical negligence.
The incident triggered tension and clashes between the deceased's relatives and police on Sunday. The Health minister said the boy's parents had alleged that his death followed the administration of an injection. A probe would be conducted, and the body would be sent for an autopsy, he said.
During the unrest, some relatives were seen hitting police personnel and security staff with helmets.
Pawan Yadav, a Class IV student from Andul in Howrah, was admitted to the hospital around 10 am with abdominal pain. His family claimed that he was walking when he arrived at the hospital but was declared dead about an hour and a half later. The relatives alleged that the child had been administered the wrong injection and questioned the absence of a senior doctor during treatment. They also disputed the number of injections given to him.
Medical College principal Indranil Biswas said the child had been brought in with abdominal pain and given an injection to relieve it. He subsequently suffered a cardiac arrest. Doctors attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but failed to revive him.
Biswas said the family's allegation that the child was given the wrong injection would
be examined.
