Kolkata, Oct. 5 -- The Calcutta High Court on Monday declined an urgent hearing on a plea by the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) seeking access to funds to clear pending salaries of its employees and pay office rent. The matter will come up in the normal course after the Puja vacation.
TMC's counsel mentioned the matter before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, alleging that a committee headed by retired Justice Subrata Talukdar had not permitted release of funds needed for essential expenses ahead of Durga Puja.
The dispute stems from police action concerning alleged financial irregularities involving three bank accounts of the party. The accounts are being overseen under arrangements put in place by the court.
On July 9, the court had directed that money required for the party's routine organisational activities and payment of its employees be released through the special officer.
The latest plea sought access to funds for immediate expenses, including outstanding salaries and office rent. The court, however, declined to take it up on an urgent basis and directed that it be heard after the vacation.
