Kolkata, Oct. 13 -- In two separate cases involving Trinamool leaders, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to former Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation chairman Sabyasachi Dutta but refused bail to former state Fire Services minister Sujit Bose.
Justice Chaitali Chatterjee (Das) granted Dutta interim bail in a case registered by Bidhannagar North police in 2018 over allegations of extortion. Dutta, who was arrested in June, had earlier approached a lower court for bail but failed to secure relief. He subsequently moved the High Court seeking release.
In a separate development, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh rejected Bose's bail application in a money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The court pronounced its decision on Tuesday, while indicating that a detailed order would be uploaded later.
Bose was arrested by the ED on May 11 in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment to the South Dum Dum Municipality. He is accused of illegally recommending names of job seekers for municipal employment.
The bail plea had earlier come before Justice Suvra Ghosh, who recused herself from passing an order in August.
While Dutta secured interim relief in the police case, Bose will have to remain in custody following the rejection of his application. The detailed order in Bose's case is awaited and is expected to provide the court's reasons for denying bail.
