Kolkata, Aug. 17 -- The Calcutta High Court on Monday deferred till Friday a plea seeking an early hearing of Trinamool Congress MLA Dilip Mondal's challenge to four FIRs against him.

Mentioning the matter before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, Mondal's counsel said the four-time MLA had approached the court against the FIRs and sought an early hearing, as he was currently in judicial custody.

The counsel also claimed that 39 FIRs had been registered against Mondal so far on various allegations.

He urged the court to take up the application at the earliest date convenient to it. Justice Bhattacharyya said the prayer for early hearing would be taken up on Friday.

Mondal was arrested by the West Bengal Special Task Force from a hotel in Puri on May 27 in connection with non-bailable FIRs over alleged threats to political

opponents and BJP workers at a public meeting in his Bishnupur constituency in South 24 Parganas.

The MLA remains in judicial remand following an order of the trial court. The proceedings before the High Court concern his challenge to four of the FIRs lodged against him.
