Kolkata, Aug. 25 -- The Calcutta High Court has allowed rival factions of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) to hold separate programmes on August 28 to mark the organisation's Foundation Day, but denied permission for either faction to hold an event at Mayo Road near the Gandhi statue.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharya permitted the groups to organise indoor programmes at separate venues, with attendance capped at 1500, against their proposed strength of 10000.
The dispute arose over competing requests by the factions to hold their Foundation Day programmes at the same location. During the hearing, the court explored the possibility of a joint celebration to avert a potential law-and-order problem. However, the parties failed to reach an agreement.
The court subsequently allowed separate indoor programmes while ruling out the proposed Mayo Road gathering for both factions.
The organisers have been directed to comply with all conditions and directions imposed by the authorities.
