New Delhi, Sept. 16 -- East Delhi is set to get an expanded critical-care facility, with the Delhi Cabinet approving a Rs 244.87-crore, 250-bed Super-Speciality-cum-Trauma Block at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Dilshad Garden. The seven-storey facility is targeted to become operational by 2028 under Phase-IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
The new block will be built within the existing GTB Hospital campus, avoiding the need for additional land. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the hospital, the only major government hospital in East Delhi, faces a heavy patient load and has high bed occupancy.
"Once the new block becomes operational, critical patients will have access to 24x7 emergency and trauma care, specialist treatment, diagnostics, surgery and intensive care at one place," Gupta said.
Spread across around 22,550 square metres, the facility will comprise a basement, ground floor and six upper floors. It will have 48 specialist OPD rooms, nine modern operation theatres and 77 critical-care beds, including 70 ICU beds and five Burns ICU beds. The ground floor will house a round-the-clock emergency department along with CT scan, MRI and X-ray facilities. Ultrasound and laboratory services will also be available. The basement will accommodate a blood bank and laboratory.
Of the total 250 beds, the block will have 20 emergency beds, four isolation beds, 22 pre- and post-operative beds, 102 general ward beds and 25 private rooms. Specialist services will include neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care.
The second floor will have a 72-bed ICU, while the fourth and fifth floors will accommodate general and private wards. The sixth floor will include offices, classrooms and a laboratory for training doctors.
The government said the integrated facility is intended to strengthen East Delhi's capacity to handle serious accidents and critical emergencies. A committee comprising senior officials from the Centre and Delhi government will monitor the construction and review progress every three months.
