Kolkata, Oct. 28 -- Government bus services have resumed in five areas of the Dinhata Assembly Constituency in Cooch Behar district after 32 years, bringing relief to residents who have long faced transport difficulties.
The services cover Shalmara, Nazirhat, Kurshahat, Basantirhat and Bamanhat. According to local accounts, the services were discontinued in 1994 during the Left Front government's tenure.
"After 32 years, bus services have resumed in the villages. After a long wait, residents are happy and have renewed hope. These buses are not just a means of transport but also open up new possibilities for connectivity, employment and a better life," state Transport Minister Arjun Singh said in a social media post.
Locals claimed that the services were discontinued after residents voted against the then government and remained suspended during the subsequent 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule.
The restoration is expected to improve connectivity for students, workers, small traders and other residents who travel to nearby towns for education, employment and business.
The initiative was taken by BJP MLA Ajay Ray, who reportedly held discussions with officials of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) to facilitate the resumption of services.
