Kolkata, July 5 -- The West Bengal government has decided to install CCTV cameras in all Block Development Offices (BDOs) following allegations of theft and corruption that have surfaced in several districts.
Senior officials of the state government said: "Allegations of large-scale corruption in Block Development Offices had surfaced during the previous government's regime. To curb corruption and improve transparency, this decision has been taken."
The move aims to improve transparency and accountability by ensuring that officials and employees carry out their duties as scheduled.
The department will also conduct regular surprise inspections across districts, with action to be taken against any negligence or irregularities in accordance with the law.
A senior government official said: "The broader goal is to make government services more transparent and accountable, while also preventing the misuse of government resources and materials."
Allegations have also been made that medical aid and emergency supplies were stockpiled in several Block Development Offices instead of being distributed to those in need during emergencies. Officials said the installation of CCTV cameras is intended to prevent such incidents in the future.
"This technology-based monitoring system will enhance transparency and ensure accountability. Officials will regularly review footage from the central control room and personally inspect Block Development Offices whenever required," the official added.
He also made it clear that negligence or irregularities of any kind would not be tolerated in any government organisation.
