Raiganj, Sept. 15 -- A 22-year-old girl, whose marriage had reportedly been finalised with a migrant worker about 17 days ago, was found hanging inside her bedroom at Goabari under Chopra police station on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Lalbanu Khatun. According to her family, she was in a relationship with Mustaque Alam, a migrant worker from a neighbouring village. The family claimed that relatives of Mustaque had visited their house around 17 days ago and held a final discussion regarding the proposed marriage.
However, the youth's father reportedly did not agree to the marriage. Basir Muhammad, father of the deceased, said that Mustaque was currently working outside the state and Lalbanu used to communicate with him over mobile phone.
"She was doing household work early on Tuesday morning. Later, she was found hanging from the ceiling of her bedroom.
We do not know why she took such a step. We want the police to investigate the matter and find out the actual reason behind her death," he said.
After being informed, police reached the spot and recovered the body.
It was sent to the hospital for a postmortem examination.
A senior police officer said the exact cause of death was yet to be established and an investigation had been initiated.
