Ghaziabad, Aug. 30 -- A 36-year-old man and his wife were killed after their motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck on NH-9 near Chhijarsi Cut under Indirapuram police station limits on Sunday morning. The impact was so severe that the motorcycle became lodged in the front of the truck and was dragged for nearly 100 metres. The truck driver fled the spot, leaving the vehicle behind.
Police identified the deceased as Ashish Anand, a resident of Saya Gold Society in Indirapuram, and his wife Neelam, 32. The couple, originally from Baghpat, had married in March 2019. Ashish worked for a private company, while Neelam was a dietitian at a private hospital.
According to Neelam's brother, Gaurav, the family had gathered at the couple's home for Rakshabandhan. As Sunday was a holiday, Ashish and Neelam had planned to go shopping and chose to take their motorcycle instead of their car to avoid traffic congestion.
"At around 11.15am, when they reached near Chhijarsi Cut, a speeding truck hit their motorcycle from behind. The bike got lodged in the truck's front section and was dragged for a considerable distance. My sister and brother-in-law fell onto the road and came under the truck's wheels," Gaurav said.
Police informed the family about the accident, and both Ashish and Neelam died at the scene.
The couple's five-year-old daughter, Ashvika, is currently staying with her maternal grandparents. The family has not yet told her that both her parents have died.
"We don't know how to tell such a small child that her parents are no more," Gaurav said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Indirapuram, Suryabali Maurya said the bodies had been sent for post-mortem examination. The truck has been seized and police are trying to trace its driver and owner. They found that the vehicle was registered in Hoshiarpur, Punjab.
"Footage from CCTV cameras installed around the accident site is being collected to establish the sequence of events. A case will be registered and further action taken after the family submits a complaint," the ACP said.
