
Kolkata, May 13 -- Garga Chatterjee, the founder member of Bangla Pokkho, has been remanded to police custody till May 16 after he was produced at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Chatterjee was arrested by Kolkata Police Cyber Crime Police Station in connection with a case of rumour-mongering and spreading false information. According to police sources, Chatterjee had posted on social media on polling day, alleging EVM tampering and raising questions over the functioning of EVMs and VVPATs. Police said the posts allegedly created confusion and led to multiple complaints regarding the electoral process. The District Election Officer (North) had lodged a complaint with the police, after which a case was registered against him.
Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata, Ajay Nand, on Tuesday, had said that another case against Chatterjee was registered suo motu by the police for uploading posts while commenting on various things against different groups, which were creating divisions.
