Malda, Aug. 4 -- The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested four alleged drug traffickers in two separate operations at railway stations in Malda, seizing around 10 kg of ganja and 1.19 kg of brown sugar.
In the first operation, three women identified as Pramila Devi, Ankita Devi and Archana Devi, all residents of Manihari and Kursela areas of Katihar district in Bihar, were arrested from the air-conditioned coach of the down Kanchenjunga Express.
Acting on a tip-off, GRP personnel searched the reserved coach and recovered nearly 10 kg of ganja allegedly concealed inside the toilet of the AC compartment. The women were taken into custody on charges of drug trafficking.
In another operation, GRP officials arrested Rana Kumar, a resident of Madhepura district in Bihar, from Malda Court Railway Station.
He was allegedly waiting to board a Malda-Katihar train when officers intercepted him based on specific intelligence. A search led to the recovery of 1.19 kg of brown sugar from his possession.
All four accused were produced before the Malda court on Monday.
GRP officials have launched a detailed investigation to identify the source and intended destination of the seized narcotics and to trace others involved in the trafficking network.
