New Delhi, Aug. 30 -- At Mahatma Gandhi Camp JJ Cluster in Punjabi Bagh, a civic drive targeted sanitation, waste removal and encroachment action.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) West Zone organised the drive along Road No. 77 in Ward 92 as part of the "Delhi Ko Kude Se Azadi" campaign. The exercise brought together the MCD, Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board and Irrigation & Flood Control Department, under the Deputy Commissioner, West Zone.
A clean-up on the ground
Around 180 Safai Karmcharis and 10 Beldars were deployed, supported by an MRS, water sprinkler, JCBs, Tata vehicles, tippers, cycle rickshaws and wheelbarrows. The operation resulted in the removal of nearly 17 tonnes of mixed municipal solid waste from the cluster and adjoining areas. Workers swept the main road, central verge/green belt and service lanes. Major and minor drains were cleared, while construction and demolition waste was removed. Trees were lightly pruned and temporary encroachments were cleared.
Inter-agency action
Delhi government officials inspected the site along with the Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of the West Zone. The inspection reviewed sanitation arrangements, cleanliness and coordinated action by participating agencies.
The West Zone undertook coordination and follow-up with agencies to facilitate joint sanitation and encroachment-removal operations.
For a JJ cluster, the intervention highlights the challenge of sustaining cleanliness beyond one-day drives. The MCD said the campaign would continue through field-level action and inter-agency coordination to improve sanitation in JJ clusters and other areas.
