Kolkata, July 15 -- In a major development, the cops of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate on Wednesday arrested the former Naihati Municipality chairman, Ashok Chatterjee, from his residence on several serious charges like molestation and corruption.
According to sources, Chatterjee is facing multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) that include illegal assembly, rioting, outraging modesty and direct involvement in a political clash in 2025 where local BJP workers were allegedly assaulted. Furthermore, the TMC leader is also allegedly involved in financial mismanagement and fund misappropriation of the Naihati Boroma temple committee.
Earlier, on June 16, a Fir was registered against Ashok and his son Abhijit Chatterjee. A few days after the FIR, Abhijit, a Trinamool Youth Congress leader, was arrested. On Wednesday, while being escorted by the police, Ashok denied his involvement in any financial corruption. He further said, "I have served this municipality faithfully for 11 years. Maybe there are some mistakes or faults."
